Associate Director of Camp Wise and Youth Advisor (Dual Role)

About the Position

We are seeking a natural connector, creative thinker, and problem-solver able to build meaningful relationships with teens, parents, and staff, as well as create and manage engaging programs for our Camp Wise day campers (especially 7th and 8th graders) and Stephen Wise Temple 7-12th grade students, including those who are not currently active.

This role will be part time (15-20 hrs a week) from date of hire through May 1; full-time from May 1-August 10.  The Associate Director/Youth Advisor position will be held by an individual that has the ability to serve a dual role.

Founded in 1964, Stephen S. Wise Temple is one of the largest Reform Jewish synagogues and schools in the country. In addition to the Temple, Stephen S. Wise is home to Wise School – from Early Childhood through Elementary School Grade 6 – and a Religious School. With over 1,700 member families and more than 200 employees, Wise is known for its extensive educational, spiritual, and musical programs, designed for individuals, couples, and families at all stages of life.

Our campus is located on the Mulholland Corridor of the Santa Monica Mountains and encompasses 19 acres.

Associate Director of Camp Wise:

The mission of Camp Wise is to provide a fun, safe, and loving community of campers and staff built on Jewish values, to meet new friends, bond with old ones, and look forward to returning every year.  We are looking for a fun-loving, detail-oriented candidate to join our Camp Wise team. In addition to helping imagine a summer of fun, specific job responsibilities include

Job Responsibilities

During the off-season:

  • With Director, interview and hire seasonal camp staff, including counselors and specialists
  • With Director, design and develop camp programming
  • With Office Manager, plan and secure field trips
  • With Director, plan new 7-8th grade program; help design curriculum and plan daily/weekly schedule
  • Assist with promotional events, on and offsite; act as a face and ambassador for Camp Wise at Stephen Wise Temple events and offsite camp fairs
  • With Office Manager, track enrollment
  • With Director, plan and oversee Staff Orientation
  • With Director, help plan, attend, and promote Camp Wise Youth events

During the In-season:

  • Act as primary liaison for CITs or 7/8th grade program
  • Track and respond to camper issues; delegate responses as needed
  • Oversee Carpool and Extended Day logistics
  • Assist Director in managing staff issues
  • Serve as liaison for special guests and specialists
  • With Director, lead and motivate campers during Morning Circle

 

Youth Advisor:

As we continue to explore new models to engage our teens beyond their b’nai mitzvah, we are looking for a team member to help us design, implement, and connect students to appropriate and meaningful programs and experiences. More than anything, we are looking for a connector—someone who can develop and nurture appropriate relationships with and for our teens.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with Director of Education, Director of Congregational Engagement, and clergy to redesign and implement a new model for our current WTY (7-12 grade program)
  • Advise WTY Student board; encourage their leadership of aspects of WTY evenings
  • Plan and staff WTY gatherings, including NFTY weekend events
  • With Director of Congregational Engagement, implement strategic retention and recruitment initiatives
  • Encourage participation in NFTY regional and national programming
  • Manage WTY budget with Director of Camp and Youth, including appropriate forecasting
  • With office manager, track enrollments and follow-up with students/families
  • Implement social action/service learning programming within WTY

 

Minimum Qualifications

Passion for building meaningful and appropriate relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
Leadership skills and capacity to serve as a positive role model of Jewish values
Ability to work independently and effectively manage collaborative programs and initiatives
A team oriented approach to work, a strong work ethic, sense of humor, growth mindset and interest in trying new things and learning from mistakes.
Strong planning and organizational skills, attention to detail, flexibility and adaptability.
Proficiency/ interest/ expertise in utilizing social media and technology for engagement and collaboration.
Excellent communication skills
Proven project management and leadership skills
Experience in working with youth in formal and informal settings, both in planning programs and building relationships
Desire to build community
High School Diploma; and some college courses

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum 3-5 years experience similar field
Bachelor’s degree preferred
