About The Position

This position plans, directs, and coordinates all custodial, maintenance, and security functions at the highest level of the organization with the help of subordinate supervisors. Responsibilities include all building and grounds maintenance, renovations, safety and emergency preparedness, vendor services, and event/logistics coordination.  The Director of Facilities & Safety reports directly to the Executive Director/COO.

About Us

Founded in 1964, Stephen Wise is a large Reform Jewish Temple.   In addition to the congregation and temple, Stephen Wise has two schools – Wise School, a Jewish day school, early childhood through 6th grade with parenting and our Center for Youth Engagement, a supplementary K-12 school which provides religious education, Hebrew language instruction, and opportunities for informal youth programming. In addition, we offer a lifelong learning program which includes opportunities for adults of all ages to continue their Jewish education.

Our campus is located on the Mulholland Corridor of the Santa Monica Mountains and encompasses 19 acres. 

About You

You have experience leading operations, facilities or construction teams and inspiring high levels of employee performance and engagement as well as a track record of improving operational efficiencies and delivering on-time, on-budget projects.


Job Responsibilities

  • Directs the custodial, maintenance, and security functions of all buildings, grounds, and facility improvement projects on a regular basis to ensure that high standards of workmanship, cleanliness, safety, and security are maintained to provide for the maximum welfare and safety of our employees, students, congregants, and others in the buildings and on the grounds
  • Supervises 15-person team and oversees numerous sizeable vendor contracts including security, transportation, contractors, and various maintenance vendors.
  • Oversees moves, renovations, expansions, and construction in our facilities
  • Coordinates with executives on real estate and facility planning
  • Oversees department’s operating and capital expense budget and forecast, implements and project manages capital needs for site
  • Develops and oversees proactive plan for upgrading aging facility infrastructure and continuous efforts to implement environmentally sensitive business practices
  • Spearheads or oversees emergency preparedness, CPR/First Aid, OSHA, safety committee, health department licenses, and other regulatory compliance areas
  • Coordinates with emergency and neighborhood services
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, ADA, EPA, AQMD, Hazmat, and building and fire codes


Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 7-10 years’ experience of successful facilities/operations management, at least half of which must have been in a supervisory capacity
  • Demonstrates excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Ability to build and sustain great business relationships internally and externally
  • Strong business, financial, and analytical acumen. Strong understanding of quality, safety and environmental practices.
  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed 
  • Must have working knowledge of project management for capital improvements
  • Thorough knowledge of building trade techniques and procedures related to plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and HVAC equipment


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual/bicultural (Spanish) a plus
